Summary

Syllabus for the diseases of the hemopoietic and lymphoid system

Objectives: Reactive lymphoid hyperplasia of lymph node

In the end of this chapter, the students should be able to

1) Understand the role of immune reaction in lymph node in the anti-infection of body.

2) Be able to choice a correct laboratory method to differentiate:

①the reactive lymphoid hyperplasia and lymphoma;

②chronic lymphadenitis and tubercular lymphadenitis.

Objectives: Lymphoid neoplasm: Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, lymphoid leukemia and Hodgkin’s lymphoma

In the end of this chapter, the students should be able to

1). Organize and be able to discuss general features of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas in terms of incidence, immunophenotyping (T/NK vs B cells), morphologic classification (WHO classification) and grading, laboratory methods of diagnosis, clinical course-prognosis, and likelihood of a leukemic phase (lymphoid leukemia).

2) Understand the theory of lymphocyte transformation which is set up by Lennert et al. Why is this theory the basis of WHO classification?

3) Understand and organize the molecular biologic changes in several subtypes of NHL (follicular lymphoma, Burkitt lymphoma, et al)

4). Organize and be able to discuss Hodgkin’s disease in terms of WHO classification, incidence of each type, morphology of the each subtypes, clinical presentation, and laboratory diagnosis.

Objectives: Myeloid neoplasm: Myeloid leukemia

In the end of this chapter, the students should be able to:

1). Describe the FAB (French-American-British) classification of acute myeloblastic leukemias (MO-M7) in terms of class-nomenclature, incidence and general features of each type.

2). Organize and be able to discuss general features of acute myeloblastic leukemia in terms of incidence, clinical presentation, morphology and immunophenotyping, laboratory diagnosis and clinical course-prognosis.

3). Organize and be able to discuss chronic myeloid leukemia in terms of incidence, clinical presentation, genetics, pathogenesis morphology-peripheral blood and bone marrow, laboratory diagnosis and clinical course-prognosis.

4). Compare and be able to discuss leukemoid reaction and acute myeloid leukemia.

Objectives: Tumors of histiocytes and Langerhans cells

In the end of this chapter, the students should be able to:

1) Understand the concept of so called “malignant histiocytosis”. Does it origin from true histiocyte?

2) Be able to recognize the Langerhans cells and their tumor by their specific ultrastructural marker.
